FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE — Feb. 8, 2022

OLYMPIA – Sen. Rebecca Saldaña, (D-Seattle), today spoke on the Senate floor in opposition to HCR 4407, the resolution amending the Washington State Redistricting Commission’s 2021 legislative and congressional district maps.

“The resolution addresses an unprecedented number of changes compared to prior redistricting resolutions, changes that should have been addressed by the commission before the deadline,” said Sen. Saldaña. “Yet, with all these changes, this resolution does not address the most significant issue in this redistricting plan: the potential violation of the federal Voting Rights Act.

“The resolution we voted on today does nothing for our state’s Latinx community in the Yakima Valley who are left once again to stand on their own in this struggle. That’s why I voted against this resolution to amend what is in my view an inherently flawed redistricting plan.”

In October, an analysis commissioned by the Senate Democratic Caucus examined public mapping proposals and recommended several Voting Rights Act-compliant districts for the Yakima Valley.
