The Washington State Senate Members of Color Caucus (MOCC) released the following statement Thursday:
“The Washington State Senate MOCC recognizes that the recent ICE raids in Washington state have struck at the heart of our communities. These raids don’t just affect individuals; they send shockwaves through entire neighborhoods, disrupt businesses, and create a climate of fear and uncertainty.
“The detention of 37 workers at Mount Baker Roofing in Bellingham and the arrest of longtime farmworker and labor rights advocate Alfredo Juarez in Sedro-Woolley are just two recent examples. When ICE conducts raids, families are torn apart, parents are taken from their children, and students in schools are left struggling. Businesses also face significant challenges, including labor shortages, operational disruptions, and uncertainty in their ability to provide goods and services.
“The MOCC believes we need an immigration system that is humane and just — not one that creates fear and separates families. That’s why we continue to push for state investments that protect due process, provide legal support, and strengthen the rights of immigrant and refugee communities. Our budget priorities this legislative session include:
- Resources for deportation defense, including a hotline, bond assistance, and legal aid for detained individuals.
- Legal representation for immigrants facing deportation to ensure they have a fair process in court.
- Increased funding for immigrant and refugee support services to help families access food, housing, and employment assistance.
- Pathways to citizenship and legal residency programs to remove barriers preventing immigrants from fully participating in their communities.
“ICE raids don’t just affect those detained — they impact entire communities, disrupt businesses, and instill fear. The MOCC remains committed to working toward a future where no one lives in fear of being torn from their home, workplace, or family.”
