Dear friends and neighbors, I am proud of what we’ve accomplished together this session for families and workers. Here are a few bills the Legislature has passed and sent to the governor for his signature: Millionaires Tax We took a historic step forward in making our tax code fairer by passing the Millionaires Tax (SB 6346). The 9.9% tax on household earnings in excess of $1 million per year (paid by less than 1% of households) will help us invest in public schools, health care, and other state services we all benefit from. Dear friends and neighbors, Thank you to everyone who participated in our 1st Legislative District telephone town hall last week! Reps. Shelley Kloba and Davina Duerr and I truly appreciate you taking the time to ask questions. Hearing directly from you provides important guidance as we finish our work in Olympia. The Senate’s operating budget As vice chair of the Ways & Means Committee, I’ve spent a lot of my time this session working with my colleagues on the Senate’s supplemental operating budget proposal, which passed the Senate on Friday. We made adjustments to the biennial budget to account for rising costs and increased demand for programs like Apple Health and the Washington College Grant, ongoing federal uncertainty, and federal ...

Dear friends and neighbors, I hope you’ll join me and my seatmates on Monday for a telephone town hall. More on that below. First, I’m pleased to share that the Senate passed the Millionaires Tax this week to help fund schools, health care, and cut taxes for working families and small businesses. Our broken tax code asks the most of those who can least afford it. Senate Bill 6346 begins to fix that by imposing a 9.9% tax on annual income over $1 million; households with incomes of $1 million and below would pay nothing (so a person making $1.2 million in a year will pay the tax only on $200,000). The proposal would also allow for the expansion of the Working Families Tax ...

Dear friends and neighbors, We have an opportunity this session to finally take a significant step forward in fixing our state’s broken tax code by asking the wealthiest among us to pay a little more to help fund schools, health care, and other necessities families are struggling to afford. Federal cuts to health care and education, combined with inflation, are driving up the cost of everything from food to housing and stretching household budgets. On top of that, our upside-down tax structure is failing to keep up with the needs of Washington families. The reason average families are feeling the squeeze is because Washington still stands out as having one of the most regressive tax codes in the ...

Dear friends and neighbors, With just over a week left in the 2025 session, the Senate is hard at work sending bills to the governor, who has already signed many into law. Our Senate budget team has also been working with our House counterparts and the governor to reach an agreement on a final operating budget that works for the people of Washington and reflects our shared values. As one of the Senate’s lead budget writers, I’ve advocated all session for progressive revenue reform to make our tax code fairer, help fund housing, ...
