Dear friends and neighbors,
As we prepare for the 2025 legislative session, I am filled with hope and determination. I am honored to share that I have been elected chair of the Senate Labor & Commerce Committee, a role that allows me to continue advocating for workers’ rights, building an inclusive economy, and ensuring the well-being of all Washingtonians.
This new role gives me a unique opportunity to advance policies that impact industries essential to building a strong economy and creating healthy communities. As chair, I will focus on issues affecting workers and businesses across Washington, including unemployment insurance, workers’ compensation, and apprenticeships. We will continue protecting consumers, enhancing labor standards, and ensuring fair regulation of industries such as cannabis, liquor, and tobacco.
Additionally, I will continue serving on the Ways & Means and Rules committees, and I am excited to join the Agriculture & Natural Resources Committee. As part of both the Senate Members of Color Caucus and the Latino Democratic Caucus, I remain committed to advocating for policies that lift up all communities, particularly those historically excluded from economic opportunities.
Building a just, healthy, and clean-fueled economy
In today’s challenging political climate, I am determined to protect Washington workers and their families. Under the new federal administration, we anticipate attacks on workers, immigrants, healthcare, and our environment, but we will be ready with a strong defense and offense. My commitment to building an economy where everyone can succeed is stronger than ever.
In industries like agriculture, hospitality, and retail — where many workers and families depend on secure opportunities — I am focused on strengthening programs that support these vital sectors. I want to ensure businesses grow alongside their workers, creating an economy where all can thrive.
We also cannot ignore the urgent threat of climate change. It is reshaping the world we live in, and we must act with urgency and compassion. A just transition for our food systems is not only necessary but achievable. We can create policies that promote a sustainable economy, protect our environment, and ensure fair compensation for producers and workers. Our children deserve a cleaner, greener future, and I will fight for a world where economic growth and environmental stewardship go hand in hand, providing a strong foundation for generations to come.
Priorities for the 2025 legislative session
My priorities this session remain rooted in the belief that every worker, no matter their background, deserves fair treatment, access to opportunities, and a voice in shaping their future.
- Strengthening worker protections and benefits: A thriving economy begins with workers who are safe, valued, and supported. I will continue to strengthen workplace protections, enhance benefits, and modernize systems to meet the needs of Washington’s diverse workforce.
- Expanding rights and representation: Every worker, from domestic workers to independent contractors, deserves protections that reflect the realities of their work. I will work to ensure all workers have the rights and representation they need to succeed.
- Building pathways to economic mobility: Every worker should have the chance to build a fulfilling career. I will focus on expanding access to training, apprenticeships, and other programs that help people gain the skills they need to succeed in today’s economy.
- Promoting inclusive and sustainable economic policies: A truly equitable economy is one where workers and businesses thrive together. I will advocate for policies that balance growth with fairness, ensuring every Washingtonian can share in the prosperity of our state.
Your voice matters
The most meaningful laws come from the people they impact. As we approach the upcoming legislative session, I need to hear from you — your concerns, ideas, and hopes for the future. Together, we can turn those ideas into action and make our state a better place for everyone.
