Dear friends and neighbors,

In recent months, I’ve had the privilege of connecting with folks in our district, participating in community events, and collaborating with various groups as we gear up for the 2024 legislative session. I’m excited about next session despite the upcoming challenges.

Personal Update

It is with a heavy heart that I share some personal news. I was diagnosed with cancer on October 27, undergoing surgery that same day. Since then, I’ve started chemotherapy, feeling strong but a bit tired. Your love and support have been a great strength. Last week, I participated remotely in Olympia’s committee meetings, ensuring our community work continues.

Looking ahead to the 2024 legislative session starting on January 8, I am completely committed. I plan to be present in person, wearing a mask, and returning to COVID-style protocols in my office. We will continue to prioritize safety, asking visitors to wear masks and conducting some meetings remotely.

While my diagnosis adds complications, I am in a strong position to navigate through this. Throughout this process, I am reminded of the importance of prioritizing my health and taking the advice of my medical team.

I share my journey with you not only as an update but with the hope that honesty and openness can serve as a source of strength for others facing their own challenges. By sharing my narrative and perspective, I want to contribute to a collective understanding of resilience, courage, and the power of community support.

Recent Achievements

In other news, I am thrilled to share my recent induction into the Transportation Choices Coalition’s Hall of Fame. My unwavering commitment to improved transportation options has led me to champion equity for historically oppressed communities. In 2022, I played a pivotal role in Move Ahead Washington’s passage, introducing people-centered programs like the Tribal Mobility and Connecting Communities Grants.

As vice chair of the Senate Transportation Committee, I’ve driven progressive investments in bike and pedestrian infrastructure, advocating for climate-friendly policies in past transportation packages. Additionally, I sponsored the Free to Walk WA bill, addressing jaywalking enforcement inequities. These efforts reflect my commitment to positive change and an equitable, sustainable future.

Ongoing Fight Against Hate

As a proud member of the Washington State Senate Members of Color Caucus (MOCC), I stand strong in support of the Caucus’s recent statement addressing the worrying rise in hate. Recognizing the global impact of tensions, we express deep concern about local anti-Semitism and Islamophobia. We stand united against violence, emphasizing the importance of combating hatred, fear, and prejudice within our communities. Our commitment to a safe, diverse, and inclusive state remains steadfast. You can read the full statement from the MOCC here.

How to Reach Me

As we gear up for the 2024 legislative session, I’m committed to keeping up the fight for workers’ rights, a clean and sustainable transportation system, and environmental justice. It is clearer to me now more than ever that our health and wellbeing are of utmost importance, which is why I will continue to fight for access to mental and physical health care for all Washingtonians.

Your input and concerns mean a lot, so please get in touch. Although my presence in the office will be somewhat limited as I heed the advice of my medical team, you can always send me an email at rebecca.saldana@leg.wa.gov, give my office a call at 360.786.7688, or stay updated on my activities in Olympia by visiting my website. You can also find updates on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.

It’s truly an honor to be your voice in Olympia.
