Our public employees dedicate their lives to helping others. It’s important than when it comes time to help them, we keep our promises.
Sen. Steve Conway recently was honored by The Retired Public Employees Council with that organization’s Legislative Champion Award. The recognition is given to lawmakers who protect the retirement security of retired state, county, city, and local government employees.
Conway was the prime sponsor of Senate Bill 5350 which provided a one-time 3% cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) to PERS 1 and TRS 1 retirees, the only pension systems managed by DRS that do not receive automatic COLAs. The bill received unanimous, bipartisan support on its way to becoming law.
“It’s so important to help our retired public employees and teachers keep up with costs in their retirement,” Conway said. “Healthcare, housing and even the cost of food is higher than when these plans were put into place, so we must keep up with costs in order to keep our promise to them.”
Conway is a two-time recipient of this honor having previously earned the award in 2020.
