The Washington State Department of Veterans Affairs recently selected Sen. Steve Conway (D-South Tacoma) as its Legislator of the Year.
Conway, who represents Parkland, Spanaway and other communities in and around south Tacoma with large populations of veteran and active-duty servicemembers, has long prioritized the wellbeing of military members and their families living in Washington.
“I’m honored to receive this award, but far more important of course is what our soldiers and veterans have done for us. We must never forget the sacrifice they’ve made for us and the fact so many servicemembers have chosen to call our state home even when their service to our country is through,” Conway said. “I try my best every day to find ways for us to give back to those that have given so much to us.”
In recent years, Conway has sponsored and worked to pass many pieces of legislation to give back to Washington’s servicemembers. This session, he introduced a property tax exemption for veterans with disabilities.
Other Conway-led policies include a bill to provide a bonus to National Guard members who help enlist others, help for military spouses moving to Washington, support for servicemembers transitioning to careers in civilian life and much more.
