Dear neighbors,

Don’t forget to come to my town hall this weekend! I will be there with my seatmates in the1st district, Rep. Shelley Kloba and Rep. Davina Duerr.  We’ll provide you with an update on this year’s legislative session and take questions about issues that are under consideration in the Legislature.

The town hall will take place on Saturday, Feb. 22, from 3-5 pm at Cascadia College, 18345 Campus Way NE, Bothell.

In other news, we just wrapped up another phase in this whirlwind 2020 legislative session. Yesterday marked the cutoff deadline for bills to pass out of the chamber where they were introduced. Only these bills will move forward as the session advances.

Below are a few of the bills I prime sponsored that are continuing to move forward this session.

In workers’ compensation cases, Senate Bill 6440 would reduce hardships for injured workers caused by independent medical exams.

Senate Bill 6473 would protect workers by requiring stricter labeling for asbestos-containing building materials and by requiring owners of manufacturing facilities to implement a management plan for known installations of asbestos as they deteriorate.

Senate Bill 6551 would reduce barriers for medical providers who graduated from institutions outside the U.S. and Canada to continue their professional careers here in Washington, which will help us address public health challenges like a shortage of physicians and a lack of access to culturally competent, high quality care for vulnerable communities.

Senate Bill 6476 would expand extended family visitation access to more family members of individuals experiencing incarceration and would require transparency in Department of Corrections contracts for telecommunication services to prevent exploitative pricing.

House Bill 1687 would prevent defendants from using a victim’s gender identity or sexual orientation to justify violent assaults. I prime sponsored this bill as a state representative and look forward to moving it forward in the Senate.
