Climate change is affecting the way we live. We’re seeing more frequent wildfires, drought and extreme weather. To avert its worst effects, we must transition to clean energy sources. My goal is to make that transition easy and affordable for Washingtonians. That’s why I’m excited to announce the implementation of our recently funded utility rebate program. Now, over 670,000 homes in Washingtonian are eligible for utility bill assistance. Some homes will have to apply to receive assistance, so I urge you to check and discover whether you qualify.
It would be expensive to ignore climate change. The number of large forest fires in Washington has doubled between 1984 and 2015, burning up natural resources, destroying homes and putting lives at risk. Increasing temperatures can lead to drought, like the one we’re experiencing this year, increasing the cost of farm water and driving up food prices. Acidification of our coastal waters harms our fish populations, requiring costly restoration efforts to protect our fishing economy.
The key is keeping energy affordable without ignoring these big problems. That’s why, in 2024, the state Legislature funded the Washington Families Clean Energy Credits program to support low- and middle-income households. If you qualify, your utility will distribute a $200 credit directly into your customer account by Sept. 15.
If you are already enrolled in one of your utility’s ratepayer assistance programs —such as the senior, disabled, or Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program — you may have the credit added automatically. If you haven’t received a credit, you still may be eligible.
By visiting the Washington Clean Energy Credit website, you can input your utility and account number to see if you qualify. If so, the website will walk you through an easy automated process for receiving your credit. They’ve also put together a video tutorial if you need help navigating the process.
I was proud to support this rebate program, but our work isn’t over yet. Washington is at the forefront of the coming green economy, and I am dedicated to ensuring no one gets left behind.
