Dear friends and neighbors,

With just three weeks left in the legislative session, we’re hard at work in negotiations over the state budget and the most important bills before us.

I’m honored to be one of the Senate’s budget leaders, helping develop a revenue package to fix our outdated, upside-down tax code and fund the support everyone needs — great schools for our kids, health care access, affordable housing, and social services for the most vulnerable.

I’ve heard constituents calling for us to raise the progressive revenue needed to keep schools open and protect services — especially now, as the federal government slashes funding for health care, scientific research, food support, and so much more. More than 84% of you voted last November to uphold our capital gains tax on the very wealthy, and I hear the message that sends.

We know we can’t balance our budget on taxes alone — there will be cuts, savings, and efficiencies. But we won’t pass an austerity budget either. We have a duty to fund our schools, health care, public safety and other services Washingtonians rely on.

There’s still a lot of negotiating to do, and not much time. I hope you know I’m fighting for the progressive values we share, and a budget — and progressive revenue — that funds the schools and services our communities need.

Join us this weekend!

Our “Government at Your Grocery Store” meeting with constituents back in February went great, and with so many important issues before us, we want to have another informal get-together this weekend to talk about our work this session and hear your questions and input.

I want to take this opportunity in session to thank my office staff who have put in long hours helping me. When you pick up the phone to talk to us about a bill, seek assistance with a state agency, or ask a question about the legislative process, Kelsey, Leydi, and Hassen are your first point of contact. They’ve provided wonderful assistance this year, and I’m so grateful for their support and service to our district.

Thank you for reading, and let’s stay in touch!
