FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – April 25, 2023

OLYMPIA – Washington students and their families can be assured their personal information will remain private thanks to Sen. Claire Wilson’s legislation.

Gov. Jay Inslee signed Senate Bill 5127 into law on Tuesday.

SB 5127 permits the redaction of a student’s personal information from public release of any type of communication with a school. It simply clarifies current law to include modern forms of communication, like email. It does not affect parents’ rights to this information.

“This legislation is simply about protecting students and ensuring their safety,” Wilson said. “We cannot put our students’ physical health, mental health or safety in jeopardy because of unclear records laws.”

SB 5127 goes into effect on July 23.
