OLYMPIA – Sen. Claire Wilson (D-Auburn) has won a seat on the Senate Rules Committee, the entity that determines whether a bill will receive a vote of the full Senate or die in committee.
“Education is one of our most important priorities, both for our children’s futures and for the overall health of our communities, but there’s tremendous competition in Rules among the various policy priorities,” she said. “My addition to Rules, along with Sen. Lisa Wellman’s addition to Ways & Means, will provide a stronger voice for education on those key committees.”
Wilson, whose 25 years of experience in public schools informs her work as Vice Chair of the Senate Early Learning & K-12 Education Committee, said she will continue to focus on early education. Wellman chairs the committee.
“We want our students to succeed and thrive, but not all students have equitable access to the opportunities available in our schools,” Wilson said. “It’s our charge to address societal and systemic obstacles unique to their households, communities and personal circumstances so that they can fulfill their potential along with their peers.”
In addition, Wilson will continue to serve on the Senate Transportation Committee and the Senate Human Services, Reentry & Rehabilitation Committee. She is also the assistant majority whip, a leadership role she has held since winning election to the Senate in 2018.
