OLYMPIA – Sen. Marcus Riccelli (D-Spokane) was officially sworn in to serve as the new senator representing Spokane’s 3rd Legislative District on Monday.

Riccelli, who will serve as the Majority Floor Leader for the Senate Democrats, served six terms in the state House of Representatives before he was elected to the Senate in November.

He replaces former Senate Majority Leader Andy Billig, who announced his retirement last year. The 2025 legislative session started on Monday and is scheduled to run until late April.

“I continue to be honored and humbled to represent my hometown of Spokane in the Legislature and I’m eager to get to work on the big challenges facing our community,” Riccelli said.

As floor leader, Riccelli will open the day’s proceedings, assign bills to committees, and set the agenda for debates on the Senate floor – ensuring that priority bills are debated and voted on.

“From job creation and affordable housing to public safety and education, I’m excited to tackle the big challenges while strongly representing the Spokane region at the leadership table,” Riccelli said.

He will also serve on the Ways & Means Committee, Health & Long-Term Care Committee, State Government, Tribal Affairs & Elections Committee, and the Rules Committee.
