OLYMPIA —Legislation to strengthen protections and oversight of children in the foster care system under the state Department of Children, Youth and Families passed the Senate today on a 49-0 vote.
“It’s so important for the state to give all children the great start in school and life they deserve, no matter the type of family or situation they are in,” said Sen. Liz Lovelett (D-Anacortes). “A strong foundation of support and care sets up children for healthy development and success later in life. The state must ensure that our oversight of services and homes lives up to our mission of protecting and strengthening children and families.”
SB 5955 , Lovelett’s first bill to win passage, would enhance child safety by improving investigations of abuse, allowing for better inter agency cooperation, and protecting the personal information of vulnerable children. Sworn into office only two weeks ago, Lovelett is the newest member of the Senate.
Having passed the Senate, the bill now goes to the House for consideration in that chamber.
