Responding to the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrest of Des Moines, WA resident Daniel Ramirez Medina, a Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipient, Sen. Karen Keiser, D-Des Moines, released the following statement:
“I am deeply concerned by the intrusive action taken by ICE agents to arrest a lawfully permitted resident in our community.
“In Washington, we have codified on a bipartisan basis opportunity and access to higher education for those who were brought into this country as children through the REAL Hope Act. Today in the Senate Commerce, Labor & Sports Committee we heard SB 5689, designed to establish statewide policies supporting Washington’s economy and immigrants’ role in the workplace.
“This is because we value and stand in solidarity with immigrants in our community who are contributing to our state, not only economically, but in our civic institutions and neighborhood organizations.
“Washington will stand at the forefront of the fight to protect those who have been failed by a broken immigration system.”
