Dear friends and neighbors,

I’m thrilled to share updates and news as we prepare for the upcoming legislative session. It’s an honor to represent the 46th Legislative District, and I’m excited about the opportunities ahead to make meaningful progress for our community.

New role as committee chair

I’m humbled to announce that I’ve been elected chair of the Senate State Government, Tribal Affairs, & Elections Committee. This committee plays a vital role in shaping policy around election integrity, tribal and veterans’ affairs, government transparency, campaign finance, emergency management, and historic preservation. These are critical areas that uphold our democracy and enhance the well-being of our communities, and I’m eager to take on this responsibility.

Since my time in the House in 2017 and now as your senator, I’ve focused on issues that matter deeply to our district, from promoting gun safety to combating hate crimes and strengthening election integrity. These experiences will guide me in this new role as I work to ensure that our government serves every Washingtonian effectively, equitably, and transparently.

In addition to chairing this committee, I’ll continue serving on the Senate Law & Justice and Transportation committees, as well as the Latino Democratic Caucus and the Members of Color Caucus.

Supporting our schools

Washington state is facing a projected budget shortfall over the next four years, creating challenges for funding critical programs. In our district, proposed school closures have understandably raised concerns, highlighting how vital our schools are to students, families, and neighborhoods.

I’m committed to standing with parents, educators, and community members to amplify your voices and fight for our schools. In Olympia, I’ll prioritize legislation to strengthen state support for education by ensuring sustainable funding for quality learning environments and safe schools. This includes exploring new revenue sources to meet our constitutional obligation to fully fund public education.

During the legislative session, we will work to draft a balanced budget that protects essential services, including education. We’ll also pursue innovative and equitable solutions to address enrollment declines and funding gaps in urban districts like Seattle. Education shapes not just our children’s futures but also the strength of our entire community, and I’m dedicated to making sure every student and educator has the resources they need to thrive.

Improving infrastructure

I want to share details about a significant infrastructure project coming to our district and the Seattle area. Starting in spring 2025, the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) will launch the next phase of Revive I-5, a multiyear effort to restore and improve Interstate 5.

From 2025 through 2027, sections of I-5 will be reduced to two lanes between the Ship Canal Bridge and Yesler Way for approximately nine months each year. Crews will repair, repave, and restore freeway sections, including 30 ramps in the project area. While these lane reductions will cause delays, this work is critical to ensuring safer and smoother commutes for years to come.

You can learn more about this project at WSDOT’s online open house, available in English, Spanish, and simplified Chinese. Visit engage.wsdot.wa.gov/revive-i-5-yesler-to-northgate for project details, timelines, and maps to help you prepare.

As your senator, I’ll continue advocating for investments that improve our infrastructure and strengthen our communities.
