After appointment by district county councils and sworn into office on Feb. 13, I’m now representing you and the communities of the 40th Legislative District.

I serve on the Senate Local Government Committee and the Senate Transportation Committee. My priorities center on issues important to the 40th district, including environmental restoration and preservation, supporting working families, and strengthening the relationship of state and local governments.

Wasting no time, I’ve already introduced legislation on these critical issues.

For our Environment

We must do what we can to protect our beloved orca in the Puget Sound. Senate Bill 5918 is one part of a package to help them. Common-sense education will ensure boaters give orcas the adequate amount of space to hunt, feed and — hopefully — regain the robust health they need to be able to raise more calves in Puget Sound.

For our Children

It’s so important for the state to give all children the great start in school and life they deserve, no matter the type of family or situation they are in. Senate Bill 5955 helps the state Department of Children, Youth and Families better fulfill its mission of protecting children in our foster care system by ensuring safer homes that provide services, improving investigations of abuse, allowing for better inter agency cooperation, and protecting the personal information of vulnerable children.

For our Communities

Local governments need to get the best value they can with public dollars. Many smaller cities and towns make group purchases together — called piggybacking — through the public contracting process for equipment, hardware, and supplies. Senate Bill 5958 will help local governments make these purchases easier and less expensive while complying with public contracting transparency.

I want to hear from you about what’s important and how our Legislature can do more for our communities. Please contact me or my office staff with any questions or concerns.

Warmly,

Liz Lovelett
