OLYMPIA – Kai Bjordahl served as a page for the Washington State Senate during the fourth week of the 2024 legislative session. Sen. Karen Keiser (D-Des Moines) sponsored his time at the Legislature.
The page program offers a hands-on opportunity for students to find out how state government works. During a week-long interactive learning experience, students are visited by guest speakers and get to draft their own bills. Students also get to explore the Capitol Campus by delivering papers for Senate staff.
Bjordahl, 14, is a freshman at Raisbeck Aviation High School. In his free time, he runs for office at his school, coaches his little brother’s soccer team, and plays video games.
Bjordahl applied to the program because two of his cousins had been in the program and lauded the experience. Also, “I didn’t apply just to pad my resume,” he said, “I wanted to learn something from it.”
Bjordahl enjoyed getting to know all the security guards with whom he spent most of his time.
Pages also create their own bill to be heard in a mock committee meeting. Bjordahl decided to work on legislation that would push back the start time of school.
