Dear friends and neighbors,
We are almost two-thirds of the way done with the 2025 legislative session! Can you believe it? Time in Olympia continues to fly by, but my team and I remain hard at work addressing the issues that matter most to our communities.
PROTECTING WASHINGTON CONSUMERS
Ensuring Washington consumers are protected from fraud and unfair business practices is one of my top priorities as a senator and chair of the Senate Business, Financial Services & Trade Committee. I am pleased to share that three of my bills designed to strengthen consumer protections have passed the Senate and are now being considered in the House.
Senate Bill 5108 improves financial protections for service contracts and product guarantees, ensuring that consumers receive the coverage they are promised. This bill helps make these agreements more transparent and affordable while requiring stronger financial backing to protect consumers if a provider fails to deliver.
Senate Bill 5109 strengthens the Mortgage Lending Fraud Prosecution Account by increasing resources to investigate and prosecute fraudulent activity in the housing market. This fund has been crucial in holding bad actors accountable, and increasing its funding will help ensure that consumers are not taken advantage of in the mortgage lending process.
Senate Bill 5280 establishes new protections for consumers who use virtual currency kiosks by capping transaction fees, setting a daily transaction limit, and requiring greater transparency in kiosk operations. With the rise in scams targeting vulnerable individuals, these measures will help prevent fraud and ensure consumers have clear information before using these kiosks.
Every Washingtonian should have confidence that they will not be taken advantage of when making financial decisions — whether it is buying a service contract, securing a mortgage, or using a virtual currency kiosk. These bills take real steps toward protecting people and making our marketplace safer and fairer. I will keep pushing to get them across the finish line.
