Dear neighbors,

For too many families today, the cost of college can seem out of reach. There are numerous resources that could help but sometimes can feel overwhelming to try to locate. I want to do all I can to steer people looking to attend college toward readily available financial resources that can cut those costs.

For my family, our state’s Guaranteed Education Tuition (GET) program enabled us to make the dream of college possible for our daughter.

GET is just one of many ways households can clear economic barriers. Another is by submitting a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Unfortunately, our state ranks 47th in the nation in FAFSA applications, with only about 17 percent of students trying for aid that could enable them to enroll in college classes and earn degrees or other credentials that could lead to better jobs and pay.

I consider access to quality education one of the pillars of a healthy community. Because of that, I work constantly with my legislative colleagues to remove economic barriers to learning and I encourage people to make the most of every opportunity that is available.

Whether you’re a high school senior planning for college, or already enrolled in a college, FAFSA can open the doors to valuable grants, scholarships and work-study programs. This handy toolkit shows how easy it is to apply by guiding you through each step. Learn more at studentaid.gov and start your FAFSA application today.

All my best,
