May those who were impacted by this senseless act find healing.<\/p>\n<p>Your legislators are working hard to change our policing system to prevent these acts, and to hold police accountable when they commit them. Today I\u2019d like to share with you the police reform bills pending in the Legislature this session.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/app.leg.wa.gov\/billsummary?BillNumber=5051&amp;Initiative=false&amp;Year=2021\">SB 5051<\/a>\/<a href=\"https:\/\/app.leg.wa.gov\/billsummary?BillNumber=1082&amp;Chamber=House&amp;Year=2021\">HB 1082<\/a> would provide timely and effective enforcement of state standards for law enforcement officers, allowing the Criminal Justice Training Commission to discipline officers who abuse the privilege of carrying a badge and gun.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/app.leg.wa.gov\/billsummary?BillNumber=5066&amp;Initiative=false&amp;Year=2021\">SB 5066<\/a> would establish clear standards for police officers to intervene when fellow officers use force unjustly and to report any wrongdoing by fellow officers.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/app.leg.wa.gov\/billsummary?BillNumber=5259&amp;Initiative=false&amp;Year=2021\">SB 5259<\/a>\/<a href=\"https:\/\/app.leg.wa.gov\/billsummary?BillNumber=1092&amp;Chamber=House&amp;Year=2021\">HB 1092<\/a> would establish comprehensive statewide reporting and publication for use-of-force incidents involving law enforcement.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/app.leg.wa.gov\/billsummary?BillNumber=1054&amp;Initiative=false&amp;Year=2021\">HB 1054<\/a> would ban the use of chokeholds, neck restraints, unleashed police dogs, no-knock warrants, military equipment, and the practice of officers intentionally concealing their badges.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/app.leg.wa.gov\/billsummary?BillNumber=5089&amp;Initiative=false&amp;Year=2021\">SB 5089<\/a> would increase minimum age and education requirements for new police officers.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/app.leg.wa.gov\/billsummary?BillNumber=5263&amp;Initiative=false&amp;Year=2021\">SB 5263<\/a> would modify a 1986 law that has prevented people who have been killed or injured by police from recovering damages from police departments.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/app.leg.wa.gov\/billsummary?BillNumber=5055&amp;Initiative=false&amp;Year=2021\">SB 5055<\/a> improves transparency, professionalism and equity of the arbitration process for law enforcement collective bargaining.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/app.leg.wa.gov\/billsummary?BillNumber=5067&amp;Initiative=false&amp;Year=2021\">SB 5067<\/a>\/<a href=\"https:\/\/app.leg.wa.gov\/billsummary?BillNumber=1088&amp;Chamber=House&amp;Year=2021\">HB 1088<\/a> would shed light on officers who are not credible witnesses because of their previous conduct.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/app.leg.wa.gov\/billsummary?BillNumber=5069&amp;Initiative=false&amp;Year=2021\">SB 5069<\/a>\/<a href=\"https:\/\/app.leg.wa.gov\/billsummary?BillNumber=1089&amp;Initiative=false&amp;Year=2021\">HB 1089<\/a> would bring transparency to investigations into police uses of deadly force.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/app.leg.wa.gov\/billsummary?BillNumber=1267&amp;Initiative=false&amp;Year=2021\">HB 1267<\/a> would mandate the independent investigation of deadly uses of force, custodial deaths, and other officer-involved incidents.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s important that I hear from you about these and other issues affecting our community.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Save the date!<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2591 size-large alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/senatedemocrats.wa.gov\/wilson\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/34\/2021\/02\/30th-42nd-Town-Halls-1-1024x576.png\" alt=\"Graphic for virtual town hall\" width=\"770\" height=\"433\" srcset=\"https:\/\/senatedemocrats.wa.gov\/wilson\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/34\/2021\/02\/30th-42nd-Town-Halls-1-1024x576.png 1024w, https:\/\/senatedemocrats.wa.gov\/wilson\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/34\/2021\/02\/30th-42nd-Town-Halls-1-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/senatedemocrats.wa.gov\/wilson\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/34\/2021\/02\/30th-42nd-Town-Halls-1-768x432.png 768w, https:\/\/senatedemocrats.wa.gov\/wilson\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/34\/2021\/02\/30th-42nd-Town-Halls-1-1536x864.png 1536w, https:\/\/senatedemocrats.wa.gov\/wilson\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/34\/2021\/02\/30th-42nd-Town-Halls-1-847x477.png 847w, https:\/\/senatedemocrats.wa.gov\/wilson\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/34\/2021\/02\/30th-42nd-Town-Halls-1.png 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 770px) 100vw, 770px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Please attend our upcoming virtual town hall on <strong>Saturday, Feb. 13 at 10:00 a.m.<\/strong> to hear about what your 30<sup>th<\/sup> legislative district state legislators are doing for you, and to ask us questions. These sites are in Kent and Auburn, and will focus on vaccinating people who face the highest risks. They are anticipated to give 500 doses of the vaccine per day, 6 days a week. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.seattlepi.com\/coronavirus\/article\/King-County-opening-up-two-new-coronavirus-15908699.php\">For more information, click here.<\/a><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Could you have unclaimed property to claim?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The Department of Revenue administers the state\u2019s Unclaimed Property program, a free service that reunites property and assets with their rightful owners. Unclaimed property includes everything from uncashed checks, utility deposits and bank accounts to the contents of safe deposit boxes, unused rebate checks and more. It does not include real estate or anything with a property title. You can search the state\u2019s unclaimed property database to see if you have anything to claim at <a href=\"https:\/\/ucp.dor.wa.gov\/\">claimyourcash.org<\/a>. You can search by name, business, or organization name.
