Lisa Wellman\n(D-Mercer Island).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cExpanding\ninternet access throughout Washington state will increase equity in both\neducation and business,\u201d Wellman said. \u201cMany of us simply can\u2019t get through the\nday without accessing the internet. But we still have so many rural communities\nthat don\u2019t have access to this essential service.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The bill establishes\nthe Governor\u2019s Statewide Broadband Office. This office previously existed in\nWashington state but was eliminated in 2014. It also requires the Public Works\nBoard to establish a competitive grant and loan program to help develop\nbroadband service to unserved or underserved areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some public\nutility districts will temporarily be allowed to provide retail\ntelecommunications services. Port districts will be able to provide\ntelecommunications services within and outside of their district limits, as a\nresult of the bill. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI want\nevery child in Washington to have access to the rich learning experiences that\ninternet access provides,\u201d Wellman said. \u201cFar too many kids in rural\ncommunities lack that access, which is truly necessary to a modern education.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Gov.
