Lisa Wellman (D-Mercer Island), and\nwas requested by Gov. Jay Inslee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI want\nevery school child to be able to go on the internet and have the richness that\nexists in that world available to them,\u201d Wellman said. \u201cSo many children in\nWashington\u2019s rural communities are falling behind because they don\u2019t have\naccess to this critical modern infrastructure. This bill is truly about\nequity.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The bill\nwould establish the Governor\u2019s Statewide Broadband Office. This office\npreviously existed in Washington state but was eliminated in 2014. It would\nalso require the Public Works Board to establish a competitive grant and loan\nprogram to provide broadband service to unserved or underserved areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some public\nutility districts would temporarily be allowed to provide retail\ntelecommunications services, and port districts would be able to provide\ntelecommunications services within and outside of their district limits, as a\nresult of the bill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Broadband\nis also a necessary tool for participation in the modern economy,\u201d Wellman\nsaid. \u201cAccess to internet will do wonders for small businesses throughout\nWashington state.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">SB 5511\nnow heads to the state House of Representatives for consideration.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A bill passed today by the Washington State Senate would expand broadband access to underserved communities.
