Lisa Wellman (D-Mercer Island), who chairs the Senate Early Learning &amp;\nK-12 Education Committee. \u201cAt its core, this bill is about safety. It\u2019s about\nmaking sure that students have a safe place to ask questions, fully understand\nconsent, and have the information they need to make safe decisions.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wellman co-sponsored the legislation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/app.leg.wa.gov\/billsummary?BillNumber=5395&amp;Year=2019&amp;Initiative=false\">Senate\nBill 5395<\/a>\nwould require public schools to provide evidence-based, sexual health education\ncurricula from a list developed by the state Office of the Superintendent of\nPublic Instruction (OSPI) or from other sources that satisfy OSPI guidelines. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among other things, the curricula must:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>encourage\nhealthy relationships based on mutual respect and free from violence, coercion,\nand intimidation; <\/li><li>teach how to\nidentify and respond to sexually violent attitudes or behaviors; and<\/li><li>emphasize the\nimportance of affirmative consent before engaging in sexual activity.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cPeople call this sex education, but\nit\u2019s about much more than sex,\u201d said Sen. Claire Wilson (D-Auburn), the bill\u2019s\nsponsor. \u201cIt\u2019s about personal health, it\u2019s about important life decisions, it\u2019s\nabout medical and economic consequences \u2014 all the things we want our young\nscholars to understand so that they can make the best choices for their health\nand their future.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wilson, who is vice chair of the committee,\nsaid the curriculum does not direct teachers to instruct students on how to\nhave sex, as has been incorrectly alleged by some; to the contrary, it is\nproven to reduce unintended pregnancy and STDs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe overwhelming majority of Americans,\nincluding parents and young people themselves, believe students should have\naccess to comprehensive sexuality health education in middle school and high\nschool and developmentally,\u201d Wilson said. \u201cInformation is power.
