Legislation making a difference<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The whole point of passing a bill is not to merely pass a bill \u2013 it is to make a real impact on people\u2019s lives. We hear about splashy legislation during the legislative session, but we rarely hear about most of the bills that we pass and how they are working to make that difference once passed. During a time of unrelenting chaos on the news and in newsfeeds, I want to provide simple updates on bills and issues that may not make headline news but are helping us treat people better and use our limited resources most efficiently. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

That is why I am updating you on <\/span>SB 5415<\/span><\/a>, a bill I prime sponsored and passed two years ago, in partnership with the Office of Public Defense. At a high level, it worked to improve the process for those who have been locked away in our psychiatric institutions, waiting to be moved through the competency process and proceed to trial. While this may not be debated on podcasts at the moment, it is a situation that has cost people in the system years of their lives, amplified uncertainty and delayed justice for victims, and has been incredibly costly for the state to address. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

At the end of the day, everyone has a constitutional right to a legal defense, but these cases are specialized and very expensive for individual courts and local governments to handle. This bill centralized this significant responsibility with the state Office of Public Defense, where it could be administered more efficiently. Since the bill went into effect in July 2023, 315 individuals have gotten the legal defense they are entitled to, at a lower cost and in a quicker time than would have happened before. That is also 315 cases that have a chance to be resolved and give certainty to all the victims and families involved. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Ultimately, the bill makes our system more streamlined and more effective \u2013 improving government efficiency and ensuring people have the legal counsel to which they are constitutionally entitled. I sincerely thank all my Senate colleagues for voting this bill out of our chamber unanimously and extend my gratitude to the House for moving it on to the Governor\u2019s office, with only legislator voting against it! <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We can do hard things, and we can do them together. Thank you for showing up and following the work I am doing as your state Senator! <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Opening the new Asia Pacific Cultural Center<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"I am so happy about the new Asia Pacific Cultural Center that is opening as a gathering place for people to come together, celebrate, support each other, and find joy together in our cultural ties and unique cultural experiences as the AANHPI community. This was the vision of three strong Aunties \u2013 Lua, Patsy, and Sen. Rosa Franklin, who have worked for more than 20 years to make this happen. I was honored to play a small role in securing some capital budget money to complete this project, but they deserve all the credit for their leadership and commitment to service. In these trying times, it is important that we have places and opportunities to come together and celebrate what makes us happy and strong. This is a wonderful thing for Tacoma!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
