Dear friends and neighbors,
We’re now nearly halfway through the 2025 legislative session, and I want to share an update on our progress. In the past few weeks, we’ve reached two key milestones — policy and fiscal committee cutoffs — which determine which bills continue advancing. While some proposals didn’t move forward, many important bills, including several of mine, are still in play.
Keeping our roads clean
As vice chair of the Senate Transportation Committee, I’m committed to improving our transportation system — including measures to keep our roads clean and well-maintained. Nobody likes seeing trash pile up along our highways — it’s bad for the environment and makes our beautiful state look neglected. That’s why I introduced SB 5556, which passed the Senate unanimously last week. This bill revamps the Adopt-a-Highway program, making it easier for local businesses and volunteers to get involved, improving accountability, and aligning it with our transportation goals. It ensures the people working hard to keep our roads clean have the tools and support they need. The bill has now moved to the House for consideration.
The future of our democracy
One of the greatest joys of serving in the Senate is recognizing young leaders in our community. Last week, I was proud to introduce and pass a resolution honoring the Tahoma High School We the People team for their remarkable 16th consecutive state championship and 27th title in 29 years. Led by their dedicated coach, Gretchen Wulfing, these students exemplify civic excellence and will represent Washington at nationals this spring. I couldn’t be more proud of their hard work and passion. Celebrating them in the Senate chamber was an honor — they give me hope for the future of our democracy!
Addressing the Budget Crisis
Washington state is facing a significant budget challenge, and it’s time for an honest discussion about the best path forward. Without new revenue, we risk deep cuts to essential programs that families rely on — an option we should not accept without exploring every solution.
Our tax system is among the most regressive in the nation, relying heavily on sales tax. During the pandemic, consumer spending kept our budget afloat, but that surge has slowed, leaving a significant shortfall. At the same time, we’ve expanded essential programs, lowered college tuition, and strengthening vital services — just a few examples of the critical investments that remain necessary but require sustainable funding. Some cuts are needed, but they alone won’t keep Washington running. People expect and deserve a government that remains functional and responsive, even in tough times. We need a balanced approach — making smart reductions while pursuing fair, responsible revenue options that provide long-term stability. Rising costs continue to strain working families, and our budget must reflect fairness and equity.
This isn’t a decision for one person, party, or branch of government. It requires collaboration and thoughtful planning. I’m committed to working with my colleagues to craft a budget that upholds our values, meets the needs of all Washingtonians, and secures our state’s future.
Standing with our communities
Our immigrant communities face growing challenges, including increased deportations and harmful policies that create fear and uncertainty. Washington has long led in protecting immigrants and refugees through laws such as the Keep Washington Working Act, which ensures local law enforcement isn’t used for federal immigration enforcement. We will keep fighting for policies that uplift and protect our communities. For support, the Washington State Commission on Hispanic Affairs offers a Rapid Response Hub with legal, financial, and social services available here.
I’m proud to stand with the Latino Democratic Caucus in reaffirming our commitment to immigrant protections. Read our statement from Rep. Lillian Ortiz-Self here.
