We focused on policies to promote greater health, safety, and dignity for members of the LGBTQ+ community in our state. And our Democratic majorities successfully blocked several dangerous bills that would have curtailed fundamental rights and worsened long-term health outcomes.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">Advancing LBGTQ+ rights<\/h2>\n<p>As the senior member of our <a href=\"https:\/\/senatedemocrats.wa.gov\/lgbtq-caucus\/\">Legislature\u2019s LGBTQ+ Caucus<\/a>, I coordinate with my colleagues well before the session starts to ensure we prioritize legislation that will improve lives and advance civil rights. In the photo above, I\u2019m celebrating the passage of SB 5599 with fellow Senate LGBTQ+ Caucus members Marko Liias (Everett), Emily Randall (Bremerton), and Claire Wilson (Federal Way). Here are a few of the bills that we passed, and Governor Inslee signed, this year:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/app.leg.wa.gov\/billsummary?BillNumber=5599&amp;Initiative=false&amp;Year=2023\">SB 5599<\/a> protects transgender youth who are not supported at home and are seeking gender-affirming care or reproductive health care by providing them safe accommodations. Despite <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestranger.com\/news\/2023\/04\/19\/78955501\/no-washington-did-not-just-pass-a-law-allowing-the-state-to-kidnap-and-transgenderify-children\">widespread misinformation<\/a> about this commonsense legislation, the bill simply protects youth in crisis by making sure they have access to safe, stable shelter.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/app.leg.wa.gov\/billsummary?BillNumber=5028&amp;Initiative=false&amp;Year=2023\">SB 5028<\/a> is a bill I sponsored to make it easier and safer to change your name legally. The credit for <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/district-of-columbia-washington-california-health-gender-c1c8a24a01c5d307bdc2e9037c1b0fd0\">this legislation goes to Maia Xiao<\/a>, a UW graduate student who emailed me last summer with concerns about how <a href=\"https:\/\/crosscut.com\/politics\/2023\/04\/wa-bill-protecting-name-change-privacy-was-just-signed-law\">Washington\u2019s current laws<\/a> left trans and nonbinary people vulnerable to harassment and viole<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/app.leg.wa.gov\/billsummary?BillNumber=1469&amp;Initiative=false&amp;Year=2023\">HB 1469<\/a>, or the \u201cshield law\u201d, protects people in Washington seeking or providing reproductive health care services and gender-affirming treatment from out-of-state efforts to pursue criminal or civil cases against them.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/app.leg.wa.gov\/billsummary?BillNumber=1155&amp;Year=2023&amp;Initiative=false\">HB 1155<\/a> protects private, personal health data with the My Health My Data Act, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atg.wa.gov\/news\/news-releases\/ag-ferguson-rep-slatter-bill-creating-health-data-privacy-protections-passes\">first-in-the-nation legislation<\/a> to give Washingtonians control over who shares and sells their health data, and the freedom to demand that businesses delete their sensitive health data.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/app.leg.wa.gov\/billsummary?BillNumber=5142&amp;Chamber=Senate&amp;Year=2023\">SB 5142<\/a> increases access to HIV and AIDS prevention medications.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/app.leg.wa.gov\/billsummary?BillNumber=5114&amp;Chamber=Senate&amp;Year=2023\">SB 5114<\/a> creates a program for healing, support and transition services for adults who have been trafficked for sex.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/app.leg.wa.gov\/billsummary?BillNumber=5186&amp;Year=2023&amp;Initiative=false\">SB 5186<\/a> requires all contracts for public works and goods or services to contain comprehensive antidiscrimination clauses.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In addition, the 2023-25 capital budget provides $1 million for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lamberthouse.org\/\">Lambert House<\/a> on Capitol Hill to build a new foundation for its building and increase its usable space for programming supporting LGBTQ+ youth.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks for taking the time to read my newsletter.
