Dear friends and neighbors,<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Since the 2026 legislative session ended, I have loved spending\u00a0time in community \u2014 listening to your stories, learning from your\u00a0experiences\u00a0and continuing our work together.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The interim is when I get to bring the work of Olympia home. Over the past several months, I have connected with students and educators, visited local organizations and small businesses, met with community leaders, and continued important conversations about affordability, education,\u00a0housing\u00a0and support for military families.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

These moments remind me that the best ideas do not begin at the Capitol. They begin with the people we serve. Your voices continue to guide my work as I build partnerships, advance our shared priorities and prepare for the next legislative session.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I am excited to share a few highlights from my time in community. As always, it is the honor of my life to\u00a0represent\u00a0and serve the 28th Legislative District.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Bringing the Legislature Home<\/b><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The work does not stop when the legislative session ends. Throughout the interim, I have been meeting with local leaders and neighbors across the 28th Legislative District to share updates on the policies and investments we advanced this year \u2014 and, most importantly, to listen.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I have had the opportunity to provide legislative updates to the\u00a0<\/span>Town of Steilacoom<\/span><\/b><\/a>,\u00a0<\/span>City of Fircrest<\/span><\/b><\/a>,\u00a0and the\u00a0<\/span>City of University Place<\/span><\/b><\/a>, as well as connect with neighbors in\u00a0<\/span>Lakewood<\/span><\/b><\/a>\u00a0and on\u00a0<\/span>Anderson Island<\/span><\/b><\/a>. These conversations help me better understand how decisions made in Olympia are affecting our communities and what priorities I should bring back to the Capitol next session.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Helping Students Fund Their\u00a0Educational Dreams<\/b><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As chair of the Senate Higher Education & Workforce Development Committee \u2014 and as a former educator \u2014 I know that completing the\u00a0<\/span>FAFSA<\/span><\/b><\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0<\/span>WASFA<\/span><\/b><\/a>\u00a0can change the course of a student\u2019s life.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This interim, I launched my\u00a0<\/span>FAFSA Completion Tour<\/span><\/b><\/a>, connecting with students and families at\u00a0<\/span>Harrison Prep School<\/span><\/b><\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>Steilacoom High School<\/span><\/b><\/a>. These visits are about making sure students understand the financial aid available to them and know that college,\u00a0apprenticeships\u00a0and other training opportunities can be within reach.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I am grateful to the students, educators, school\u00a0leaders\u00a0and statewide partners who continue working with my office to help more Washington students access the resources they have earned.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Celebrating Young People Stepping\u00a0into\u00a0Their Futures<\/b><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Every young person deserves to enter adulthood knowing they have people in their corner.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It was especially meaningful to join\u00a0<\/span>Eileen & Callie\u2019s Place for Celebrate 18<\/span><\/b><\/a>, honoring young women with foster care experience as they step into adulthood. As someone who experienced foster care myself, I know how important it is for young people to have stability, encouragement and a community that believes in them.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Their strength, joy and determination were powerful reminders that aging out of foster care should never mean facing the future alone. I\u00a0remain\u00a0committed to advancing policies and investments that help young people build secure, successful futures.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Learning the Legislative Process Together<\/b><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Understanding how a bill becomes law is one way we can help more people see themselves as part of the policymaking process.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I was honored to join the\u00a0<\/span>Alpha Omicron Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.<\/span><\/b><\/a>\u00a0at the University of Washington for \u201cHow to Read a Bill.\u201d We walked through the parts of a bill, discussed how legislation changes throughout the process and explored how community members can make their voices heard.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I also welcomed students from\u00a0<\/span>Realize Tacoma<\/span><\/b><\/a>\u00a0to the Capitol for a conversation about public service,\u00a0leadership\u00a0and the legislative process. I loved hearing their questions and encouraging them to recognize the power of their own voices.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Showing Up in Community<\/b><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Some of the most meaningful moments of the interim have come from gathering in community and celebrating the people, cultures and traditions that make our district special.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I was grateful to spend time in DuPont during the 2026 Canoe Journey<\/strong><\/a>, including\u00a0witnessing\u00a0the final landing and connecting with Tribal and local leaders. I have also enjoyed visiting community events and local small businesses across the district, including the\u00a0<\/span>DuPont Farmers Market<\/span><\/b><\/a>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

These opportunities to listen, learn and build relationships are an important part of how I\u00a0represent\u00a0our communities in Olympia.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Building Economic Freedom and Opportunity<\/b><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Juneteenth<\/span><\/b><\/a>\u00a0is a celebration of freedom, but it is also a reminder that freedom must be made real in people\u2019s everyday lives.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This year, I joined community conversations about what economic freedom should look like in 2026 and beyond. That means access to quality education, stable housing, good jobs, affordable health\u00a0care\u00a0and the ability to build wealth and security for the next generation.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I also\u00a0participated\u00a0in\u00a0<\/span>a discussion connected to the FIFA World Cup\u2019s presence in Seattle<\/span><\/b><\/a>. Major events can generate tremendous economic activity, but our work must be\u00a0intentional,\u00a0so those benefits reach local workers, small businesses and communities that have too often been left out.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Supporting Women in Public Service<\/b><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I was honored to join the\u00a0<\/span>Interagency Committee of State Employed Women<\/span><\/b><\/a>\u00a0for its annual professional development conference and speak about women\u2019s leadership and human-centered public service.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

State employees make a difference in people\u2019s lives every day, often through work that happens outside the spotlight. Our public institutions are strongest when employees feel valued, supported and empowered to lead. I am grateful for the women across state government who bring their experience,\u00a0compassion\u00a0and commitment to serving Washingtonians.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Learning from Our Military Community<\/b><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Representing\u00a0a district that is home to Joint Base Lewis-McChord, I know how important it is for policymakers to understand the unique contributions and needs of our military community.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I was grateful to\u00a0participate\u00a0in\u00a0<\/span>Team McChord\u2019s Civic Leader Flight<\/span><\/b><\/a>\u00a0and learn more about the mission of the 62nd Airlift Wing. From mission briefings to a flight aboard a C-17 Globemaster III, the experience offered a firsthand look at how our servicemembers support humanitarian efforts, national\u00a0defense\u00a0and global mobility.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Thank you to Col. Regni, the 62nd Airlift Wing and Team McChord for welcoming me and for your continued service to our state and nation.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Wildfire Recovery and Insurance Resources<\/b><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

My heart is with everyone affected by\u00a0<\/span>the devastating wildfires in Spokane<\/span><\/b><\/a>, on the Colville Reservation and across Washington. The scale of the loss is heartbreaking, and I am grateful to the first responders, emergency personnel and community members working to keep people safe.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Insurance Commissioner Patty Kuderer has issued an emergency order<\/span><\/b><\/a>\u00a0providing\u00a0additional\u00a0protections for affected policyholders through Sept. 30. These protections include grace periods for premium payments, waived late fees and\u00a0additional\u00a0notice before policies can be canceled or not renewed.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Please share\u00a0<\/span>these disaster recovery and insurance resources<\/span><\/b><\/a>\u00a0with anyone who may need support.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

After\u00a0<\/span>our first gathering in\u00a0Fircrest<\/span><\/b><\/a>, we hosted another in Steilacoom in August.<\/span><\/p>\n
