OLYMPIA — A bill to streamline and modernize the process for transferring ownership of a totaled vehicle to an insurer was heard Tuesday in the Senate Transportation Committee.
Senate Bill 6265, sponsored by Sen. T’wina Nobles (D-Fircrest), would reduce paperwork barriers and update state law to allow more flexible, modern documentation when a vehicle is declared a total loss and an insurance claim has been paid. The goal is to make the process faster, clearer, and easier for vehicle owners while maintaining accurate state records.
“Losing a vehicle is stressful enough,” Nobles said. “This bill is a simple, practical update that cuts red tape and makes the transfer process more straightforward for Washingtonians and insurers alike.”
The bill focuses on efficiency and consumer experience by aligning state processes with current business practices and electronic documentation standards.
