They can motivate students to enroll in postsecondary programs, opening doors to many lucrative and fulfilling careers.<\/p>\n<p>These programs are increasingly popular \u2014 nearly 62% of Washington\u2019s high school students completed at least one dual-credit course in 2020. But disproportionately fewer low-income students, English-language learners, students who identify as Black, Latino American Indian, Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander took advantage of dual-credit opportunities.<\/p>\n<p>Education advocates like the Washington Student Achievement Council have identified cost as one potential barrier to dual-enrollment.\u00a0<a class=\"content-link external\" href=\"https:\/\/app.leg.wa.gov\/billsummary?BillNumber=5719&amp;Year=2021&amp;Initiative=False\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SB 5719<\/a>, sponsored by Mark Mullet, D-Issaquah, would lower the cost for College in the High School courses from $65 to $35 per credit, and establish a grant program for low-income students.
