Dear friends and neighbors:

One of the benefits of returning to Olympia for in-person work next January is that the legislative internship program is up and running again, enabling students to see how their government operates from the inside.

To apply for the 2023 program, go to www.leg.wa.gov/internships and apply before the priority deadline of Oct. 19 or the final deadline of Oct. 23. This terrific experience is open to juniors and seniors of any major who are in good academic standing, are able to receive academic credit for their time as an intern, and either are attending a four-year college or university in Washington State or are Washington State residents attending an out-of-state college or university. Interns receive a stipend of $2,400 monthly to help with expenses.

Candidates may also apply for the Rosa Franklin Legislative Internship Program Scholarship. Established in 2021 to remove barriers and support interns who demonstrate financial need, this scholarship helps with costs associated with relocation, housing, food, childcare, professional attire and more. (As a side note, donations ensure the Rosa Franklin Scholarship continues to achieve its goal and directly help interns participate in this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity; if you or someone you know would like to make a donation, go to the online donation portal.)

These internships provide experiences and lessons that will last a lifetime, and I recommend them enthusiastically.

Stay healthy and take care,
