OLYMPIA – In recognition of his extraordinary leadership on tenant’s rights issues, the Alliance of Eastside Agencies has named Sen. Mark Mullet, D- Issaquah, 2016’s Elected Official of the Year.
During the 2016 legislative session, Mullet sponsored Senate Bill 6413 which requires landlords to publicly post whether or not they accept a reusable tenant screening report. The use of reusable screening reports enables prospective renters from having to pay multiple times for additional background checks for different landlords. Paying for multiple background checks when house hunting can become expensive, especially for people who are already having trouble making ends meet.
“I am honored to receive this award,” said Mullet. “The costs associated with shopping for a new place to live keep rising and can break the bank for many families looking for a new home. I’m proud that we were able to pass this bill so that we can provide some financial relief for apartment hunters.”
SB 6413 also includes languages that eliminate hurdles for certain people who have been evicted in the past by preventing screening reports from listing an eviction on a tenant’s credit report if the eviction has been overturned or resolved.
“Throughout my legislative career, I have worked hard to tackle complicated issues by bringing both sides of the issue to the table, said Mullet. “Senate Bill 6413 is an example of what we can accomplish when we set aside our differences and work together.
“As the cost of living keeps rising throughout the Puget Sound, I know that this is going to continue to be a hot topic next session. I look forward to continuing my commitment to expand housing opportunities and keep housing affordable for Washington’s renters.”
The Alliance of Eastside Agencies is a membership organization of health and human service providers from across the Eastside. The AEA includes around 40 non-profit organizations and government agencies serving East King County.
