Bill Update<\/strong><\/p>\n

Nothing is more important to me than public safety. Whenever I craft legislation, I think, \u201cwill this make our community, our district, and our state safer?\u201d That is why I am proud to tell you about some of the eight bills we have passed out of the Senate.<\/p>\n

SB 5067 <\/strong>will reduce Washington\u2019s blood alcohol limit for drivers from .08% to .05%. Our roads are not as safe as they used to be and not as safe as they could be. Over half of the 809 deaths on our roads last year involved a driver under the influence. That\u2019s more than one DUI-related death every single day. At .05-.07%, you are far more likely to be involved in a collision than an unimpaired driver. Drunk driving is a choice, and this bill will make it clear that no one <\/strong>should make the choice to drive under the influence.<\/p>\n

SB 5068<\/strong> will expand public employee eligibility to those legally authorized to work in the United States, addressing our critical shortage of vital public servants such as peace officers, firefighters, and prosecutors.<\/p>\n

SB 5420 <\/strong>will ensure that veterans, servicemembers, and their families are granted same access to the same benefits across the board, regardless of where or when they serve. Our veterans made a commitment and risked their lives to protect our country. In return, we make a commitment to them to offer services they need to lead successful lives after serving. This bill will make sure we honor that commitment.<\/p>\n

SB 5974<\/strong> will ensure law enforcement leaders are held to the same standards of accountability that we hold every other Washington state peace officer to. I was proud to serve over 40 years in law enforcement as a state trooper and sheriff of Snohomish County. I learned that nothing <\/strong>is more important than respecting the integrity of the law and the dignity of the office of sheriff. This bill will make sure voters can trust those running to serve as law enforcement leaders and ensure community members know their police chiefs, sheriffs, and marshals, and everyone we trust to enforce the law are well trained, highly prepared and professional.<\/p>\n

SCR 8406 <\/strong>bill re-establishes the\u202fJoint Select Committee on Civic Health. It brings together people from across the state to develop practical and transformative ideas that involve our civic health.<\/p>\n
