Marko Liias, D-Lynnwood, the bill\u2019s sponsor. \u201cThis legislation is geared to helping them better process and understand the full impacts of what\u2019s going on around them and with them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Liias\u2019 <a href=\"http:\/\/apps.leg.wa.gov\/billinfo\/summary.aspx?bill=6273&amp;year=2015\">Senate Bill 6273<\/a> would establish a process whereby students, parents or guardians, teachers and other school employees, administrators, volunteers and community representatives engage in an ongoing discussion concerning safe technology use and digital citizenship.<\/p>\n<p>The idea for Liias\u2019 bill came from Claire Beach, a retired media literacy educator from the Edmonds School District.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhether consuming media, accessing online information, or communicating with their peers, today\u2019s kids face a mine field of potential threats,\u201d Liias said. \u201cWhat they learn in school can help protect them from missteps and malignant actions by others.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Students would be receive better guidance and tools in navigating the pitfalls of digital media and communication, under legislation passed unanimously today by the Senate. \u201cIn this digital age, online activities and influences play a larger and larger part in our children\u2019s lives,\u201d said Sen.
