Friends and neighbors,

The 2025 legislative session is moving quickly, and I’m committed to keeping you informed on the work being done to tackle key challenges in our communities. From protecting workers to strengthening public safety, we’re making meaningful progress.

Bringing back local news

In my last update, I highlighted Senate Bill 5400, my bipartisan proposal to establish the Washington Local News Journalism Corps. Again, this grant program would support local news organizations, with a particular focus on underserved communities.

I’m happy to share the bill received a public hearing earlier this week! We heard from the many people this would help, like Theresa Wippel and Carl Zapora, both with My Neighborhood News Network, which includes My Edmonds News and Lynnwood Today — outlets absolutely vital to our communities in the 21st. Watch my testimony and theirs here.

You can listen to my recent interview with John Carlson on Jan. 30 (my segment runs from 66:10-82:47) or check out this Seattle Times story to learn more.

Supporting our pilots’ mental health

In 2023, an off-duty airline pilot in the midst of a mental health crisis almost caused an accident during an airborne flight that took off from Paine Field. That incident highlighted a big issue for us — the lack of accessible mental health care for airline pilots. That’s why I’m sponsoring Senate Bill 5396 to ensure they get the care they need and deserve.

It would allow pilots undergoing the Federal Aviation Administration’s medical recertification process for mental health treatment to access Washington’s Paid Family and Medical Leave program. If they exhaust those benefits, their employer would continue paying their wages, ensuring they can focus on their health without financial hardship.

This bill also had a public hearing this week, where we heard just how desperately this policy is needed. Several pilots shared their experiences of navigating the certification process under immense stress. Their stories make it clear: We must do more to support those who keep our skies safe. Watch my testimony and theirs here.
