Karen Keiser (D-Des Moines) has filed a suite of bills to rein in sharply rising prescription drug prices.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a crisis,\u201d said Keiser. \u201cMy colleagues and I hear every day from constituents who can\u2019t afford their medication anymore, people who have to choose between prescriptions and rent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have a responsibility to curb excessive costs of critical prescription drugs that are vital for people\u2019s health. I\u2019m working together with stakeholders to take several steps to make crucial, life-sustaining medications more affordable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Keiser has pre-filed five bills to tackle the problem from multiple angles. The bills will be considered during the 2020 session, which begins on Jan. 13.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/eur04.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fapp.leg.wa.gov%2Fbillsummary%3Fbillnumber%3D6087%26year%3D2019&amp;data=02%7C01%7C%7C52c31fbdc1e448d27e1408d78a2282a8%7C84df9e7fe9f640afb435aaaaaaaaaaaa%7C1%7C0%7C637129753164521999&amp;sdata=YDp6MYmHHn0NRbBdjVBslxLxgHWzhB%2FRolcL3CAjSTc%3D&amp;reserved=0\">SB 6087<\/a> would cap the out-of-pocket cost to patients for insulin at $100 per month.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/eur04.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fapp.leg.wa.gov%2Fbillsummary%3Fbillnumber%3D6088%26year%3D2019&amp;data=02%7C01%7C%7C52c31fbdc1e448d27e1408d78a2282a8%7C84df9e7fe9f640afb435aaaaaaaaaaaa%7C1%7C0%7C637129753164521999&amp;sdata=hFW%2FbZdmFxX4NCfHFMlGR0yEXz7q9%2BSHY63GGwS8nJ8%3D&amp;reserved=0\">SB 6088<\/a> would establish a prescription drug affordability board that would review prices to see if maximum price caps are needed.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/eur04.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fapp.leg.wa.gov%2Fbillsummary%3FBillNumber%3D6110%26Initiative%3Dfalse%26Year%3D2019&amp;data=02%7C01%7C%7C52c31fbdc1e448d27e1408d78a2282a8%7C84df9e7fe9f640afb435aaaaaaaaaaaa%7C1%7C0%7C637129753164532007&amp;sdata=YhBQkOZH1C8BE5kVWzvK%2BejSSdFPRBFLsQjT8gMiuhs%3D&amp;reserved=0\">SB 6110<\/a> would provide a mechanism for the state to import prescription drugs from Canada under a federal waiver.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/eur04.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fapp.leg.wa.gov%2Fbillsummary%3FBillNumber%3D6111%26Initiative%3Dfalse%26Year%3D2019&amp;data=02%7C01%7C%7C52c31fbdc1e448d27e1408d78a2282a8%7C84df9e7fe9f640afb435aaaaaaaaaaaa%7C1%7C0%7C637129753164532007&amp;sdata=KgAPweyT%2FEQmQUXiKum1v%2F5wKxTMSlwabtBpgmUCWlc%3D&amp;reserved=0\">SB 6111<\/a> would allow the state to contract with Canadian pharmacies that state employees could use for their needed high-cost medications.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/eur04.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fapp.leg.wa.gov%2Fbillsummary%3FBillNumber%3D6113%26Initiative%3Dfalse%26Year%3D2019&amp;data=02%7C01%7C%7C52c31fbdc1e448d27e1408d78a2282a8%7C84df9e7fe9f640afb435aaaaaaaaaaaa%7C1%7C0%7C637129753164542014&amp;sdata=e1Vw0i0G1V6%2Fqds50hmycc8KYV15WFGJWK16bkGLjZE%3D&amp;reserved=0\">SB 6113<\/a> would create a centralized purchasing process for insulin, based on the approached used by the state to purchase childhood vaccines.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Keiser is also continuing work to update a bill passed last year, <a href=\"https:\/\/eur04.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fapp.leg.wa.gov%2Fbillsummary%3FBillNumber%3D1224%26Initiative%3Dfalse%26Year%3D2019&amp;data=02%7C01%7C%7C52c31fbdc1e448d27e1408d78a2282a8%7C84df9e7fe9f640afb435aaaaaaaaaaaa%7C1%7C0%7C637129753164552022&amp;sdata=cXWo%2BXn1UqBk%2BA2lwKW5WogA0iK0qjPSSxEBVMb0WD0%3D&amp;reserved=0\">HB 1224<\/a>, that was supposed to provide drug price transparency, but has yet to be fully implemented.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI expect lots of pushback from lobbyists and the companies that are profiting from high prescription drug prices,\u201d said Keiser. \u201cBut this is too important to wait.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>OLYMPIA \u2014 Sen.
