Dear friends and neighbors,
It’s such an honor to continue serving the 5th Legislative District — first as a state representative, and now, as your state senator. I’m deeply grateful for the trust you’ve placed in me and excited to keep fighting for the people, families, and communities who make our district so special.
This month, I was officially sworn in as your senator, and it’s a moment that reminded me why I do this work: to ensure our neighborhoods are safe, our families have opportunities to thrive, and our kids can reach their full potential.
As we wrap up the second week of this year’s 60-day legislative session, I want to share what I’m focused on, what’s coming up, and how you can stay connected with what’s happening at the Capitol.
Priorities for this Legislative Session
This short session comes at a critical time for our state. My focus is on protecting our communities and ensuring Washington remains a place where everyone can thrive. Some of my top priorities this session include:
- Standing up for Washingtonians: Pushing back against harmful federal actions that threaten our values, rights, and communities.
- Affordability and the state budget: Working to make life more affordable for families while carefully managing state resources to support essential services and long-term priorities.
- Supporting education: Ensuring every child has access to a strong public education by supporting our schools, educators, and students.
- Public safety: Supporting strategies that keep our communities safe while ensuring fairness, accountability, and a focus on preventing harm.
- Protecting the environment: Ensuring clean air, clean water, and a healthy future for generations to come.
Legislation I’m Sponsoring

I’ve already introduced several bills this session designed to strengthen our families and communities. Here are a few highlights:
- SB 6222 – Expanding Access to Technology for Students
This bill makes it easier for schools to get technology into the hands of students who need it most. Under the bill, schools can give or sell surplus laptops, tablets, and other devices directly to students, with a focus on supporting low-income families. By making these devices more accessible, every student can have the tools needed to participate in online learning, complete homework, and build the digital skills essential for success in school and beyond.
- SB 6178 – Protecting Homeowners After Disasters
This bill helps homeowners maintain control over their property insurance claims. It prevents contractors or other third parties from pressuring families to sign over their insurance benefits after a loss. With recent flooding in our district and other natural events affecting communities, this legislation is especially timely, giving families greater security and peace of mind when they need it most.
- SB 6054 – Protecting Homes from Wildfires
This bill makes it easier for homeowners to use fire-resistant materials on their homes, even in neighborhoods with homeowners’ association (HOA) rules. By reducing unnecessary restrictions or extra costs, families can better protect their homes and communities from wildfires.

Welcoming a Senate Page

One of the highlights of the session so far has been welcoming a Senate page into my office. Pages play a vital role in our legislative process, and it’s inspiring to see young people engage with state government firsthand. It’s a reminder that our democracy is strongest when we invest in the next generation of leaders and create space for them to learn, participate, and feel that they belong in these halls.
