{"id":3426,"date":"2026-02-20T15:12:00","date_gmt":"2026-02-20T22:12:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/senatedemocrats.wa.gov\/hansen\/?p=3426"},"modified":"2026-02-25T14:26:32","modified_gmt":"2026-02-25T21:26:32","slug":"what-were-doing-on-affordability","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/senatedemocrats.wa.gov\/hansen\/2026\/02\/20\/what-were-doing-on-affordability\/","title":{"rendered":"What we\u2019re doing on affordability"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Dear friends and neighbors,\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Washington\u00a0state needs to be more affordable for families to live here.\u00a0I\u2019ve\u00a0done a lot of work keeping college tuitions low and increasing financial aid; this session,\u00a0I\u2019ve\u00a0continued that work and supported\u00a0bills to reduce property taxes,\u00a0control the costs of medical debt, and make it easier to build housing so we can drive down housing prices.\u00a0Here\u00a0are some highlights:\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Keeping College Affordable<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">College tuition is one of the largest expenses for many families. I was happy to support the bipartisan bill that cut tuition\u00a0at our public colleges and universities\u00a0in 2015; since then, we have successfully kept tuition increases\u00a0at about 2-3% a year (down from the double-digit increases we saw in the early 2010s).\u00a0I was\u00a0also the prime sponsor of the bill that created the Washington College Grant, which provides financial aid that makes public college completely tuition-free for low-income families and gives partial scholarships to middle-class families.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">These efforts have paid off:\u00a0today,\u00a0about\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washington.edu\/opb\/uw-data\/fast-facts\/fast-facts-html-only\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">70% of University of Washington students graduate without debt<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0(up from about\u00a046% in 2015); about 57% of WSU students graduate without debt (up from about 35%\u00a0in 2015). We can always do more; but\u00a0I\u2019m\u00a0proud that\u00a0we\u2019ve\u00a0kept\u00a0college degrees\u00a0affordable at our outstanding public colleges and universities.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">More Affordability Bills<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559685&quot;:0}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Below are some of the bills\u00a0I supported in\u00a0the Senate\u00a0which now\u00a0await consideration from the House to help make life more affordable:<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559685&quot;:0}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"1\" data-list-defn-props=\"{&quot;335552541&quot;:1,&quot;335559685&quot;:360,&quot;335559991&quot;:360,&quot;469769226&quot;:&quot;Symbol&quot;,&quot;469769242&quot;:[8226],&quot;469777803&quot;:&quot;left&quot;,&quot;469777804&quot;:&quot;\uf0b7&quot;,&quot;469777815&quot;:&quot;hybridMultilevel&quot;}\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/app.leg.wa.gov\/billsummary?BillNumber=6162&amp;Year=2025\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Senate Bill 6162<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0would expand the senior property tax relief program and create a standard $7,500 deduction for those who qualify.
