Dear friends and neighbors,

We just finished week one of the 2026 legislative session. I hope you will continue sharing the issues that matter most to you and your family.

Protecting our communities from ICE

We’ve seen disturbing reports about ICE activity in Washington state and across the country. I recently filed the Secure and Accountable Federal Enforcement (SAFE) Act (SB 5906) to prevent ICE from going inside schools, daycares, hospitals, and more without a judicial warrant. We already have strong protections in this state thanks to the Keep Washington Working Act. The SAFE Act expands these protections because we want people to feel safe working at a daycare, going to a doctor, or going to class without looking over their shoulder and wondering if ICE will come inside without a warrant. The bill has a public hearing in the Senate Law & Justice Committee Tuesday, Jan. 20 at 8 a.m. You can track its progress here and sign up to testify or show your support here

How to get involved

I hope you’ll stay in touch throughout the session to let me know what’s on your mind. If you’re looking to get more involved this session, here are a few ways to do so:

  • Learn how a bill becomes a law.
  • Find legislation on the issues important to you.
  • Watch live committee hearings, floor debates, and archived videos of your democracy in action.
  • Testify before legislative committees remotely or in person.
  • Reach out to my office anytime with any questions or concerns at 360-786-7644 or Drew.Hansen@leg.wa.gov. The more I hear from you, the better I can serve you. You can also follow along for more legislative updates on my official Facebook and Instagram pages.

Page program

The Washington State Legislature offers one of the best page programs in the country. I had a memorable time paging in Olympia when I was in middle school! This exciting program allows Washington students to immerse themselves in the legislative process and meet other students from across the state. If you know a student between the ages of 14 and 16, encourage them to apply. Learn more here

Sincerely,

Drew Hansen
