Dear friends and neighbors,
With just two weeks left in the 2025 legislative session, we are busy voting on key bills and negotiating a final state budget that works for the people of Washington.
Right to repair bills advancing
If you own an electronic device or use a wheelchair and it breaks, you should be allowed to fix it yourself or take it to a local repair shop. Unfortunately, some companies intentionally make products difficult or impossible to repair. For people with disabilities, this can mean weeks without mobility as they wait for an appointment at a manufacturer’s repair shop. My bill, SB 5680, will give wheelchair users the right to repair their own equipment. I’m pleased to share the bill passed the House today! I’m grateful to the prime sponsor of the main bill in this area, Rep. Mia Gregerson, as well as my constituent, Marsha Cutting, and other advocates in the disability community for helping us understand how much this bill will help. I’m also happy to share the Senate this week passed Rep. Gregerson’s Right to Repair Act. Both bills will help save families money, reduce electronic waste, and support small businesses.
Fun visit with Blakely Elementary School
I loved getting to visit with this incredible group of fourth graders from Blakely Elementary School, which is my kids’ former elementary school! We had a great time talking about our work in Olympia and answering some terrific questions — we even did a mock bill exercise where the Blakely Bulldogs debated whether to make “coconut chicken” a mandatory school lunch option each day. Thank you for making a trip to the Capitol!
As always, please stay in touch and reach out to my office anytime.
Sincerely,
Drew Hansen
