Dear friends and neighbors,

We’re past the halfway mark of the 2025 legislative session. Most important:

You’re invited to our in-person town halls!

Do you want to hear more about the work we’re doing in the Legislature, or have questions about a particular bill? Your 23rd district lawmakers want to hear what’s on your mind. We have two town hall options for you to attend on Saturday, March 22:

  • 9:30-11 a.m. at Bainbridge High School (9330 High School Rd. NE, Bainbridge Island, WA 98110)
  • 1:30-3 p.m. at Olympic College Bremerton Campus Theater (1600 Chester Ave., Bremerton, WA 98337)

Strengthening Washington’s Shield Law

In 2023, we passed the Shield Law to safeguard those seeking or providing legal reproductive health care in Washington state. This week, the Senate passed one of my bills (SB 5632) to strengthen that law, clarifying what it means to assist with protected care and ensure the attorney general can identify and challenge noncompliant out-of-state subpoenas. As other states roll back abortion access, we remain committed to protecting the rights of every person.

K-12 education funding

Much of my work this session has been centered on ensuring our students and teachers have the resources they need to succeed. I’m proud that one of our key K-12 funding bills, sponsored by my friend, Sen. T’wina Nobles, passed the Senate this week. The bill would ensure state funding more accurately reflects the actual costs districts face to maintain facilities, provide curriculum, and meet other essential operational needs. This will allow schools to focus on supporting students, not worrying about resources. While we face a difficult budget year, we must ensure our schools see investments, not cuts. The Senate is expected to consider more K-12 funding bills in the coming days.

As always, please feel free to reach out to my office directly with any questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

Drew Hansen
