Dear friends and neighbors,
We’re off to a busy start of the 2024 legislative session! I’m so excited about the work we have ahead of us over the next 54 days.
Chief Justice Gonzalez swore me in on the first day of the legislative session last Monday. It’s an honor to continue working for the people of the 23rd Legislative District as the Senate’s newest member.
On Friday, we had a hearing on a bill (SB 5999) I’m sponsoring that would make college and career training programs more affordable. I’m grateful for the many students who came to testify in support.
In 2019, we passed a landmark free college tuition bill I sponsored. Tens of thousands of families have already benefited from it. We heard from several students on the impact that free or reduced tuition has had for them, and why we should expand access to even more working families.
The public overwhelmingly supported the bill at the hearing: 367 people signed in to support; no one signed in opposed. As the ranking Republican member on the committee noted, “The message is pretty clear on this bill.”
