{"id":1477,"date":"2020-02-18T17:09:38","date_gmt":"2020-02-19T01:09:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sdc.wastateleg.org\/dhingra\/?p=1477"},"modified":"2020-09-17T00:09:59","modified_gmt":"2020-09-17T00:09:59","slug":"senate-passes-dhingra-bill-to-establish-first-in-the-nation-firearm-violence-prevention-office","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/senatedemocrats.wa.gov\/dhingra\/2020\/02\/18\/senate-passes-dhingra-bill-to-establish-first-in-the-nation-firearm-violence-prevention-office\/","title":{"rendered":"Senate passes Dhingra bill to establish first-in-the-nation firearm violence prevention office"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Today, the Senate passed legislation to collect statewide data on firearm violence and fund innovative prevention programs in local communities.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/app.leg.wa.gov\/billsummary?BillNumber=6288&amp;Year=2019&amp;Initiative=false\">Senate Bill 6288<\/a> would establish the first-in-the-nation Washington Office of Firearm Safety and Violence Prevention, which would work with law enforcement agencies and others to collect and centralize data on firearm violence, including suicide.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, the office would administer the Washington Firearm Violence Intervention and Prevention Grant Program, a competitive process to fund evidence-based initiatives undertaken by cities and community-based organizations in Washington.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis bill is about understanding where violence occurs in our communities and how we can intervene to address it\u2014and making sure that we are helping victims of violence,\u201d said Sen. Manka Dhingra (D-Redmond), the bill\u2019s prime sponsor.<\/p>\n<p>The office\u2019s approach is modeled on King County\u2019s Shots Fired project. Every year, 155 King County residents die from gunshots, and another 150 are hospitalized, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/app.leg.wa.gov\/committeeschedules\/Home\/Documents\/26004?\/Senate\/17548\/01-01-2019\/12-31-2019\/Schedule\/\/\/Bill\/\">report<\/a> from the project presented at a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tvw.org\/watch\/?eventID=2019101063\">work session<\/a> of the Senate Law &amp; Justice Committee last fall. This violence also causes lifelong trauma for survivors. The Shots Fired project brings a public health approach to firearm violence, with an emphasis on early intervention and prevention. SB 6288 applies the approach statewide.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the Legislature, we have been taking meaningful steps to transform our criminal justice system from a crisis response model to an early intervention and prevention model,\u201d Dhingra said. \u201cThis bill is an important addition to that work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Having passed the Senate on a vote of 25-23, SB 6288 now moves to the House of Representatives.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Today, the Senate passed legislation to collect statewide data on firearm violence and fund innovative prevention programs in local communities.
