Still, the proposed legislation offers a preview of what changes, if any, lawmakers want to make to K-12 spending and policy, for this or next year.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s a short list of some of the bills related to public schools that may be up for debate when the Legislature convenes on Jan. 13:<\/p>\n<p><b>&#8230;<\/b><\/p>\n<p><strong>Free feminine-hygiene products in school:\u00a0Senate Bill 6073<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Late last fall, Sen. Manka Dhingra, D-Redmond, visited a social studies class at Lake Washington High School.<\/p>\n<p>There, she heard a presentation from six students about why school districts should provide feminine-hygiene products at no cost to students in middle and high school. And that presentation inspired Dhingra to\u00a0<a class=\"content-link external\" href=\"http:\/\/lawfilesext.leg.wa.gov\/biennium\/2019-20\/Pdf\/Bills\/Senate%20Bills\/6073.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">file SB 6073<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWithout menstrual products, nearly\u00a0<a class=\"content-link external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tennessean.com\/story\/news\/education\/2018\/08\/14\/lack-feminine-hygiene-products-keeps-girls-out-school\/948313002\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">1 in 5 American girls<\/a>\u00a0have either left school early or missed school entirely,\u201d Dhingra said, citing some of the students\u2019 research.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-container u-ofh u-bg-dark-off-white full-width-inset mb-4 mt-4 pt-0 ad-container-single\">\n<div class=\"ad-container-inner mh-auto u-df flex-nowrap\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-body2a\" class=\"dfp-ad ad ad-single\" data-google-query-id=\"CNPBxdS-mOcCFVeUfgodtpoMVA\">\n<div id=\"google_ads_iframe_\/81279359\/seattletimes.com\/education-lab_4__container__\">Already, states like California, Illinois, New Hampshire and New York require schools to provide free tampons and other menstrual products for students. SB 6073, which has bipartisan support from 18 co-sponsors, would do the same in Washington.
