Manka\nDhingra<\/a>\n(D-Redmond) to provide property tax relief to those who can least afford an\nincrease \u2014 senior citizens, persons with disabilities, and veterans who reside\nin areas with a high cost of living.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAffordability\nis a huge problem in the 45<sup>th<\/sup> Legislative District and surrounding\ncommunities,\u201d Dhingra said. \u201cSeniors and people on fixed incomes, many of whom\nhave called the 45<sup>th<\/sup> home for decades, are being priced out of their\nhomes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Under\ncurrent law, the senior property tax exemption is calculated based on statewide\nincome thresholds that do not account for the different cost of living in\ndifferent counties. Senate Bill 5160 will base eligibility instead on each\ncounty\u2019s median household income. The bill also adjusts the disability rating qualification\nfor the disabled veterans property tax exemption program to 80 percent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cCurrent\nexemptions do not account for regional differences,\u201d Dhingra said. \u201cThis bill\nfixes that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">SB 5160 passed out of the House and\nSenate with overwhelming bipartisan support. It now heads to Gov.
