Dear friends and neighbors –<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

On Thursday, I joined <\/span>State Treasurer Mike Pellicciotti and financial education advocates to announce a bill I\u2019m sponsoring to require financial education as a graduation requirement in Washington state. This legislation would ensure every student graduates with the tools needed to manage their finances and build a secure, prosperous future for themselves, their families, and their communities.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As a parent and teacher, I know firsthand how important it is to prepare students for their future, and that includes providing comprehensive financial education.<\/span> Filling out employment contracts for a new job, taking out a loan for postsecondary education, signing a lease, and applying for a credit card can be complicated, especially when you are just entering adulthood. Too often, young people make honest financial mistakes that follow them for years. We can help prevent this by making financial education a graduation requirement, and that\u2019s why I\u2019m proud to sponsor this legislation.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We need to ensure our schools are providing students with a basic financial instruction, so they have the necessary skills to be successful the moment they graduate high school.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Improving financial education in our state is just one example of an issue area I\u2019m prioritizing this upcoming legislative session. It\u2019s critical I hear from you so I can better represent our community in Olympia.
