OLYMPIA — Legislation to protect families and children from gun violence in public spaces passed the Washington State Senate Wednesday.
Senate Bill 5098, sponsored by Sen. Javier Valdez (D-Seattle), enhances public safety by prohibiting weapons in government buildings, public park facilities, and fairgrounds — places where families and children gather.
“No one should have to think twice about their safety when taking their kids to the park or attending a local fair,” Valdez said. “This bill is about keeping our communities safe, preventing unnecessary tragedies, and ensuring that public spaces remain places of joy and connection — not fear.”
The legislation builds on Valdez’s Senate Bill 5444, which was signed into law in 2024 and prohibits firearms in libraries, zoos, aquariums, and transit centers. By extending these restrictions to parks, government buildings, and county fairs, SB 5098 aims to close any loopholes in the current law and strengthen public safety statewide.
Exemptions are provided for law enforcement personnel and individuals with a valid concealed pistol license in certain designated areas.
The bill now moves to the House for consideration.
