Rebecca Salda\u00f1a (D-Seattle), would create a pilot program\nthrough the Department of Children, Youth, and Families (DCYF) that would\nprovide housing assistance to parents whose lack of appropriate housing is the\nprimary barrier to reunification with a child who has been removed from their\ncare.&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFamilies\nalready face many barriers to affordable housing, and with children temporarily\nremoved from the home, housing assistance programs are even less accessible,\u201d said\nSalda\u00f1a. \u201cThis makes it extremely difficult for parents in this situation to\nobtain the appropriate housing necessary to reunify with their kids. This program\nwould remove that barrier to bringing a family back together, and reduce the\ntime kids are separated from their parents.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">SB 5718\nrequires DCYF to consult with a stakeholder group that includes parent allies,\nparent attorneys and social workers, housing organizations, behavior health\nproviders and others to determine details for the pilot program, such as\neligibility requirements and equitable program distribution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The bill now moves to the House for\nconsideration.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>OLYMPIA \u2013 Today the Senate passed legislation to establish a child welfare housing assistance program to shorten the time that children remain in out-of-home care.
