hearing\u00a0on\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/app.leg.wa.gov\/billsummary?BillNumber=6162&amp;Year=2025&amp;Initiative=false\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">SB 6162<\/span><\/b><\/a><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0my bill to expand property tax relief for seniors, people with disabilities, and disabled veterans. This legislation is long overdue, and\u00a0I\u2019m\u00a0honored to serve as its prime sponsor.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559738&quot;:240,&quot;335559739&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Under current law, the Senior Property Tax Relief Program exempts qualified individuals from excess levies, the state school levy, and certain regular levies.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559738&quot;:240,&quot;335559739&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">SB 6162 builds on that foundation. The bill would expand eligibility by increasing the income threshold by 10%,\u00a0allowing an estimated 30,000\u00a0additional\u00a0households\u00a0to be\u00a0eligible for relief. It also simplifies deductions by allowing individuals to claim a $7,500 standard deduction and households to claim up to $15,000,\u00a0eliminating\u00a0the need to itemize. In addition, seniors who rent out part of their primary residence would be able to deduct up to $6,000 in rental income\u00a0when\u00a0determining\u00a0eligibility.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559738&quot;:240,&quot;335559739&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Most importantly, this bill helps more of our neighbors who are on fixed incomes stay in their homes. I\u2019ve heard far too many stories from constituents who are being priced out of the homes they\u2019ve lived in for decades or forced to make impossible choices just to pay their property taxes. SB 6162 is about providing real, meaningful relief, giving people the security and dignity they deserve. This effort connects students to local, state, and national civic conversations at a moment when voting is most relevant. Washington students are enthusiastic, engaged, and eager to\u00a0participate\u00a0in our democracy. SB 6130 gives them a meaningful opportunity to put their civics education into action and encourages lifelong civic engagement and a commitment to voting in every election.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559738&quot;:240,&quot;335559739&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Improving Access to Technology after Graduation:\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">On Wednesday, the Senate Early Learning &amp; K-12 Education Committee heard one of my co-sponsored bills, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/app.leg.wa.gov\/BillSummary\/?BillNumber=6222&amp;Year=2025&amp;Initiative=false\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">SB 6222.<\/span><\/b><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0This legislation would allow public schools to sell surplus technology and expand the program to allow school districts to provide surplus devices at\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">no cost to low-income students\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">after graduation. Peninsula High School has successfully run a similar program for years, with an estimated 70% of students opting in.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559738&quot;:240,&quot;335559739&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">By allowing students to\u00a0purchase\u00a0the device they used in high school at a reduced cost\u2014or receive one at no cost\u2014SB 6222 helps remove a major financial barrier as students move on to college, the workforce, or training programs. The bill expands opportunity, reduces waste, and ensures students have the tools they need to succeed.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559738&quot;:240,&quot;335559739&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Honoring our Washington National Guard:\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">On Wednesday, I brought\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/app.leg.wa.gov\/billsummary?BillNumber=8668&amp;Year=2025&amp;Initiative=false\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Senate Resolution\u00a08668<\/span><\/b><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, honoring the Washington State National Guard,\u00a0to the Senate floor. The soldiers and\u00a0airmen\u00a0of the Guard\u00a0have been serving our State for more than 150 years.
