Discussions underway to help Green River Valley business owners find flood insurance 10/26/2009
Olympia -- South King County lawmakers are working with businesses to address the flood insurance crisis in the Green River Valley.
Although the federal government, through FEMA, provides subsidized homeowners flood insurance and limited business coverage, many companies are reporting that the private insurance policies, known as "surplus lines," have been canceled or cannot be purchased at an affordable cost. There are concerns that flood fears and intense media coverage have exacerbated the problem.

Dear Friends and Neighbors, Statement by Senate budget writers on signing of state 2009-2011 operating budget 5/19/2009OLYMPIA – Gov. Chris Gregoire today signed the 515-page supplemental and 2009-2011 state operating budget, vetoing a handful of sections due to disagreement or for technical corrections. Democratic Sens. Margarita Prentice of Renton and Rodney Tom of Bellevue, chair and vice chair of the Senate Ways & Means Committee, issued the following statements: Senate sends balanced budget to governor; state services to see $4.3 billion in cuts 4/25/2009The state Senate tonight approved an all-cuts proposal to balance the state budget, sending it to the governor’s desk on a 29-20 vote. The plan plugs the state’s $9 billion, recession-fueled budget shortfall aided by $3 billion in federal stimulus and $1.5 billion obtained through use of reserves, fund transfers and other measures. But deep cuts to state programs, colleges and schools totaling roughly $4.3 billion made up by far the single largest component of the Legislature’s budget solution. Photo: Sen. Gregoire 4/23/2009Prentice bill banning cigarette delivery by mail passes Legislature 4/21/2009A bill banning the shipment of tobacco products to the general public when purchased by mail or on the internet passed the Legislature this week. Sen. Margarita Prentice, D-Renton, the bill’s sponsor, says the law needed to be changed because of a recent federal court decision. “It’s clear that this is one of the big ways kids are getting cigarettes,” Prentice said. “With this court decision, the state couldn’t require delivery people to verify the age of the recipient anymore, so we changed the law so that cigarettes ordered online can only be delivered to retail stores or wholesalers.” Sen.
